My Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy on education, as of now, is based on various readings, professional research, observations, and my teaching experience.

I believe the role of the school is to protect and comfort each child in a positive learning environment.  The school must build a safe community, giving every child educational and personal support and the ability to grow as an individual.

As a teacher, I will always be a professional.  I must know the characteristics of the school’s surrounding community.  I believe my role as the teacher is to nurture, support, and encourage each child to achieve success.  I believe, as a teacher, I must know every child as a whole.  I must become familiar with every child’s home life and family.  I must know each child’s best learning styles, strengths and challenges.  As a teacher, I must learn what levels children are developing at physically, socially/emotionally, and cognitively.  This will then assist my understanding of what instruction is developmentally appropriate for each child.  As a teacher, I must be prepared and able to modify all activities to allow all students to be successful.  I need to advocate for every child as well as teach them to become advocates for themselves.

I believe children need to construct their own knowledge, as Piaget believed.  Children will learn more effectively by exploring the material through hands-on activities.
